Our Story so far
Cynnal Bro Machno was set up in October 2025, predominantly as a campaign to save our local pub, The Eagles Penmachno, from impending closure.
Local residents came together, over a series of public meetings, in order to setup an organisation that would enable us to pursue the opportunity to purchase the pub and to maintain it as a vital community asset.
By the end of October officers for Cynnal Bro Machno had been appointed, a committee had been formed and the group became part of a Community Benefit Society named Cymdeithas Dai Bro Machno Cyfyngedig. As a legal entity, regulated by the FCA, this means that we are now able to pursue funding streams to help us to finance the purchase of The Eagles.
Bro Machno
Situated in the beautiful Eryri National Park, Bro Machno encompasses the neighbouring villages of Penmachno and Cwm Penmachno, along with the surrounding areas. The area has a deep-rooted history in the slate mining industry, with the local mine providing a huge source of local employment in the early 20th century. In modern times employment opportunities are not as forthcoming, due to the rural location of the area, though the valley does attract a great deal of tourism through its beautiful natural resources and mountain bike trails. The local population estimated at between 600-700 residents rely heavily on a village shop and the solitary pub, The Eagles, which are situated centrally in Penmachno itself.
The Eagles is a very popular destination for visitors, but is also integral to the community as more than just a pub, rather a central location for people to come together in tackling social isolation. The pub hosts very successful Welsh language learning classes, traditional music evenings, fundraising quizzes and much more. As such Cynnal Bro Machno are wholeheartedly dedicated to ensuring that this vital resource remains active. You can read more about The Eagles itself here
