The heart of our community
The Eagles Penmachno
The Eagles is traditional country pub which sits proudly in the centre of the village of Penmachno, in the Eryri National Park. It is a focal point of the village where locals and visitors socialise, tales are told, Welsh songs are sung and people can relax in front of a log fire.
More than simply a pub, The Eagles hosts weekly Welsh language classes, monthly “open mic” music evenings and regular fundraising quizzes. As well as being a thriving hub for local residents, The Eagles also welcomes a great number of visitors annually. The onsite bunkbarn can host upto 29 people, and is very popular with groups taking advantage of the beautiful local landscape and mountain bike trails.
You can find out more about the pub and bunkbarn on the Eagles Penmachno website.

History of The Eagles

The earliest known record of The Eagles in Penmachno dates back to 1773, confirming that an inn was already established on this site in the 18th century. It appears again on the 1839 Penmachno Tithe Map, listed as the Eagles Inn, with a tenant and adjoining land noted.
Locally, the property has long been known by its traditional name, Ty Uchaf. These findings show that The Eagles has been a recognised and important part of the Penmachno community for at least 250 years.
Penmachno is a historic village set within Eryri National Park, a place of striking beauty and long human history. The village grew around its agricultural roots and the nearby slate quarries, which once employed large numbers of local men and shaped the rhythm of life throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries. Smallholdings and chapels formed the backbone of village life, and Welsh has remained the everyday language of the community for generations. Penmachno is also an important site in Welsh history: in 1294, Madog ap Llywelyn issued the Penmachno Document here, declaring himself “Prince of Wales” during his uprising against English rule. This connection gives the village a unique place in the story of Welsh identity and independence.
Through all these changes, The Eagles has stood as a familiar constant. In more recent years, the pub and bunkhouse have welcomed walkers, cyclists, and visitors exploring the surrounding forests and trails, while still hosting regular community events such as folk music nights, quizzes, charity fundraisers, and celebrations.
